AFI Changemakers Summit
32nd Session of the Human Rights Council
14 June 2016

AFI Changemakers is thrilled to announce our next big event: the AFI Changemakers Summit at the Human Rights Council 2016. Timed to coincide with the 32nd Session of the Human Rights Council, and continuing our work getting the voice of young people heard at the United Nations, this exciting event is scheduled for 14 June 2016 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

If you’re a young professional person (less than 30 years old) who is passionate about human rights, this event will take you to the heart of the action, bringing together the next generation of young human rights champions. Ariel Foundation International is delighted to have recently achieved ECOSOC status, meaning we will be able to take you closer to the inner workings of the UN than ever before.

Looking Back On An Extraordinary 2015 Year for AFI!

In 2015, Ariel Foundation International (AFI) broke new ground in several international areas for children and youth.

Children's Summits: In March and June 2015, AFI and Ariana-Leilani Children's Foundation held the first Children’s Human Rights Summit at the United Nations on Children’s Rights Summit (Report), and the second Children’s Summit at the UN On Promoting Peace (Video, report), and in October, the third Summit Children Summit on Promoting Human Rights (Video, report to come).

Changemakers: In May, Youth leaders from 18-29 through our AFI Changemakers Summits conducted important groundbreaking work at the World Health Assembly (Report).  In November, pioneering work continued at Changemakers at the UK Parliament with Julie Ward, MEP as Chair (report to come).   In December the Changemakers submitted an official statement to the UN Right to Development (Statement).

European Parliament and UN Committees: AFI Children’s human rights team gave a presentation (video, report to come) on their experiences at the conference on children as actors transforming society (CATS) to Members of the European Parliament, while our young adult team attended the UN Committee on Discrimination in Geneva (report).

EP Oberver Status Granted: At the end of December AFI was given observer status at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Looking Forward to 2016: In 2016 we plan to continue our pioneering work with empowering and opening doors for children with a summit on “children human rights for all” in March, a Changemakers Summit on Human Rights in June, children at CATS in July/August, and finally Changemakers Summit for
the 25th Anniversary to the Right to Development. In addition’ we will continue to support children and youth to realize their rights to participate fully in society regardless of the country in which they are born or their socio-economic status.

Happy New Year!

Changemakers from around the world came to Geneva to connect with each other and participate in intense workshops at the United Nations on themes related to the Right to Development.  Outcomes of workshops were fedback at a high level official UN event. The outcomes of the Summit provided a framework for the Changemakers platform to contribute to work of UN in 2015.
